Trusted Across Appleton & The Fox CitiesThe Fox Cities Have Specific Roofing Challenges. We Know Them.
Appleton sits in a unique pocket of Wisconsin weather. The Fox River corridor channels summer thunderstorms right through Outagamie County and on September 7, 2021, that corridor produced the largest hailstorm in county history: 22 large hail reports inside a single hour, with hailstones up to 4.5 inches measured north of Appleton. Roofs across Mackville, Freedom, Greenville, Kaukauna, and the I-41 corridor were destroyed almost simultaneously.
On top of that, Appleton's housing stock spans every era from the 1880s craftsman homes around City Park and Lawrence University to the modern construction in Apple Hills and Thornbrook Estates. Each style has its own ventilation, insulation, and snow-load requirements. We've worked across all of them, and we've coordinated with most of the major insurance carriers active in the Fox Cities.
From Historic Central to Apple Hills We Know Every Corner
Different parts of Appleton come with different roofing realities. Here's how we approach the major neighborhood styles across the city.
Historic Central & City Park
Century-old homes around City Park and Lawrence many over 100 years old. Original sheathing, period ventilation, and limited eave overhangs make these roofs ice-dam prone. We spec proper venting and ice-and-water shield to fit the historic envelope.
Old Third Ward & Prospect Avenue
Victorian and early-20th-century homes overlooking the Fox River, near the Hearthstone Historic House Museum. Steep pitches and complex valleys mean these roofs need experienced crews who respect the architecture during a re-roof.
North Appleton & Apple Hills
Estates and executive homes from Apple Hills (5,000+ sq ft on acre lots) to Thornbrook Estates and Apple Creek. Large complex roofs, premium materials, and 2021 hailstorm exposure make this where high-end roof replacements concentrate.
South Appleton & Telulah
Tree-lined boulevards near River Drive, character homes with waterfront exposure, and park-centered neighborhoods. Mature trees mean more leaf debris in gutters and more wind-thrown limb damage during storms.
Grand Chute & Fox River Mall
The I-41 commercial corridor anchored by Fox River Mall plus newer residential subdivisions. Heavy commercial roofing demand (TPO, EPDM) alongside family homes that were directly in the path of the 2021 hailstorm.
Kimberly, Kaukauna & Neenah
The 4.5-inch hailstone of 2021 fell near Kaukauna. Combined with Kimberly's older neighborhoods and Neenah's historic paper-magnate mansions, the surrounding Fox Cities make up a major part of our Appleton service area.
Outagamie County's Largest Hailstorm On Record Hit Right Here
Most homeowners remember it. On September 7, 2021, a single hour of severe weather rewrote the National Weather Service record books for Outagamie County. Here's what happened and what it means for your roof.
Record Hailstone
A 4.5-inch hailstone fell near Apple Creek at 7:47 AM the largest ever documented in Outagamie County history.
Large Hail Reports
NWS Green Bay logged 22 large hail reports between 7:30 and 8:30 AM that morning concentrated north of Appleton.
Of Claims Denied
In 2023, insurance companies denied 37%+ of homeowner claims nationally (NAIC). Documentation matters we handle it.
Coverage Cutoff
Many Wisconsin policies no longer cover roofs older than 20 years. If yours is close, the time to act is before the next storm.

Learn MoreCommon Questions From Fox Cities Homeowners
If you don't see your question here, give our N.E. Wisconsin team a call at (920) 739-0728.
Most Wisconsin insurance policies have a one-year window to file a hail claim, so the 2021 storm is generally past the original deadline. However, if you discovered damage later, weren't aware of the claim window, or your insurer specifically allows a longer window, it may still be worth a conversation. More importantly: any subsequent hail event since 2021 (and there have been several in the Fox Cities) opens a fresh claim window. We can inspect your roof and tell you which storm the damage most likely traces to.
Hail damage isn't always visible from the ground. Common signs include granules in your gutters or downspouts, dented soft metals like vents and flashing, and dark "bruises" on shingles. After any storm with hail of 1" or larger which has been frequent in Outagamie County we recommend a free professional inspection. Class 4 impact-resistant shingles can take a 2" steel ball drop test without damage, but most older Appleton roofs aren't Class 4 yet.
Historic homes in central Appleton especially the area around City Park and Lawrence often have original sheathing, narrow eaves, period-style ventilation, and steep pitches that aren't standard on modern subdivisions. We approach these projects differently: deck inspection during tear-off, period-appropriate shingle profiles (architectural lines that read as character grade), proper venting that doesn't compromise the home's historic envelope, and ice-and-water shield specifically configured for low-overhang eaves prone to ice damming.
Dukes Roofing has been a permanent Wisconsin presence since 1996. We have local N.E. Wisconsin crews, dedicated phone lines (920) 739-0728, and we've been working across Appleton, Kaukauna, Kimberly, Neenah, Menasha, Greenville, and Grand Chute for decades. We're not packing up after the next storm and our 5-year workmanship warranty means we'll be back if anything ever needs attention.
For Appleton's combination of winter snow loads and summer hail (the 2021 storm being the extreme example), we typically recommend Class 4 impact-resistant asphalt shingles like GAF Timberline AS II or HDZ. Class 4 systems may qualify you for an insurance discount with most major carriers active in Outagamie County. Standing-seam metal is another strong option it sheds snow effectively and handles hail without granule loss. Whatever the system, ice-and-water shield coverage and balanced ventilation matter as much as the shingle choice.
Most standard residential roofs across the Fox Cities are completed in 1-2 days. Larger or more complex homes (think Apple Hills or Thornbrook Estates) may take 2-3 days. Commercial projects along the I-41 corridor are scheduled around your operations to minimize disruption. We'll give you a firm timeline before work begins, weather-aware around Wisconsin's installation temperature requirements.
