What we do with skylights
Most skylight problems are roofing problems. A unit that leaks is almost always a flashing failure at the curb, not a defect in the glass. That is why we handle skylights as part of the roof system rather than as an add-on.
Leak Diagnosis
Water showing up near a skylight often started somewhere else on the roof. We find where it actually enters before anyone quotes you a new unit. Sometimes the fix is flashing and a few hundred dollars.
New Installation
Cutting a new opening means framing, headers, a drywall shaft through the attic, and correct flashing at the deck. We handle all of it, including the interior finish work most roofers subcontract out.
Replacement
Old acrylic domes yellow, crack, and eventually leak. Replacing one during a reroof costs a fraction of doing it as a standalone job, because the shingles are already off.
Before You Budget
For years, homeowners could claim a federal tax credit on skylights. A lot of roofing and skylight websites still advertise it. As of 2026, it no longer exists.
Section 25D was the 30 percent Residential Clean Energy Credit. It covered solar powered fresh air skylights and solar blinds, including installation. It no longer applies to expenditures made after December 31, 2025.
Section 25C was the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit, worth up to $1,200 a year against qualifying windows and skylights. It ended for property placed in service after December 31, 2025.
Both were repealed by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, seven years ahead of their original schedule. There is no phase-down and no proration. A skylight installed in 2026 gets nothing.

If a contractor is still using a tax credit to close skylight work in 2026, ask them to put the credit amount in writing.
The case for a skylight now is what it always was underneath the incentive: daylight in a room that does not have any, and ventilation you can open. Those are worth what they are worth without a subsidy attached.
Straight Answers
What actually drives skylight cost
Nobody can quote a skylight over the phone honestly. Here is what changes the number, so you know what we will be looking at.
- New opening versus replacement
Replacing an existing unit is straightforward. Cutting a new one means framing, headers, an interior shaft, drywall, and paint. That is the single biggest cost difference.
- Fixed, manual venting, or electric
A fixed unit is glass that does not open. Manual venting cranks open. Electric and solar powered units add a motor, rain sensor, and remote. Price climbs in that order.
- Shaft length and attic depth
A vaulted ceiling means the skylight sits right at the roof deck. A conventional attic means building a light shaft down through it, which is finish carpentry and drywall work.
- Roof pitch and access
Steeper roofs take longer and need more staging. A second story on a steep pitch is a different job from a single story ranch.
- Deck condition underneath
If we open it up and find rotted decking from an old leak, that gets repaired before anything new goes in. We will show you the photos.
Timing Matters
Replace the skylight while the roof is off
This is the one piece of skylight advice that saves real money, and most homeowners hear it too late.
A skylight and an asphalt roof do not have the same service life. If your skylight is twenty years old and the roof is coming off anyway, replacing the unit during the reroof costs a fraction of what it costs to do separately later. The shingles are already up, the flashing is already coming out, and the crew is already on the roof.
Do it the other way around, and in six years you pay a crew to tear open a roof that is still perfectly good just to get at a failed skylight. We have done that job plenty of times. It is avoidable.
If you are getting a roof quote from us and you have skylights, ask what replacing them would add. Sometimes the answer is that they are fine and should stay. We will tell you that too.
Worth Knowing
What a skylight actually does for a room
Skylights get oversold. Here is the honest version of what they change.
- Daylight in interior rooms with no exterior wall
- Roughly twice the light of a same-size wall window
- Venting units pull humidity out of baths and kitchens
- Privacy that a wall window in the same spot cannot give
- Less daytime lighting load in dark rooms
- Blinds and shades to control Oklahoma afternoon heat
One caution worth saying out loud: in Oklahoma, a south or west facing skylight without a shade can put real heat into a room in July. Orientation and glazing matter here more than they do further north, and we will talk through both before we cut anything.

Skylight questions from Tulsa homeowners
Do skylights leak?
A correctly installed modern skylight with a factory flashing kit should not leak. The reputation comes from older units and from installations where the flashing was improvised on site. If yours leaks, that is a workmanship or age problem, not an inherent flaw in skylights.
One thing that gets mistaken for a leak: condensation. In winter, warm humid air hitting cold glass produces water that runs down the shaft and looks exactly like a roof leak. We can tell the difference.
Is there still a tax credit for skylights in 2026?
No. Both federal credits that applied to skylights, Section 25D for solar powered units and Section 25C for energy efficient ones, ended for anything installed after December 31, 2025. They were repealed by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. Any contractor still advertising these credits for a 2026 install is working from outdated material. Confirm your own situation with your CPA.
How long does a skylight last?
Modern glass units with proper flashing generally run in the same range as a good asphalt roof or longer. Older acrylic domes have a much shorter life and tend to yellow, craze, and crack, especially with Oklahoma sun exposure. If you have a plastic dome and cannot remember when it went in, it is probably near the end.
Should I replace my skylight when I replace my roof?
If the unit is aging, yes. The labor overlap makes it dramatically cheaper than doing it later as a standalone job, and it avoids reopening a new roof in a few years. If the skylight is newer and in good condition, we will reflash it and leave it. We will tell you which situation you are in.
Can you add a skylight to any room?
Most rooms, but not all. It depends on what is in the attic above, whether the roof framing is trusses or rafters, and what the roof pitch is over that room. Trusses cannot be cut freely the way rafters can. We will look at the attic before telling you it is possible.
Will a skylight make my house hotter in summer?
It can, and in Oklahoma that is a real consideration. South and west facing skylights pick up significant afternoon heat. Low-E glazing helps, and blinds or shades help more. North facing units give steady light with much less heat gain. Orientation is part of the conversation, not an afterthought.
Does hail damage skylights?
Yes. Skylights are one of the first things we check after a Tulsa hailstorm, along with soft metals and vents. Tempered glass units hold up reasonably well, but acrylic domes crack.
