Why Tulsa Roofs Take A Beating

Green Country sits in the middle of hail alley

Northeastern Oklahoma is one of the most hail-prone regions in the country. Tulsa County sits where Gulf moisture running north meets dry air coming off the High Plains, and that collision is what builds the supercells that drop hail on Green Country every spring.

The heaviest activity runs from roughly March through June, with a second, smaller window in the fall. A single storm can move through Broken Arrow and south Tulsa and leave two neighborhoods a mile apart in completely different condition.

What that means for a Tulsa homeowner is simple: roofs here age faster than the shingle warranty assumes, and damage is often invisible from the ground. A roof can lose most of its remaining service life to a hailstorm and still look fine from the driveway.

What To Look For

Signs your roof took damage in the storm

Most hail damage is not dramatic. It shows up as bruising in the mat of the shingle, granule loss, or dented soft metals. Here is what our estimators find on Tulsa roofs after a storm.

Hail damaged asphalt shingles showing granule loss and bruising
Hail Bruising Soft dark spots where the impact crushed the mat under the granules. Often invisible until you press on it.
Wind damaged roof with lifted and missing shingles
Wind Lift And Creasing Shingles that broke their seal and folded back. The crease stays even after the shingle lays back down.
Interior ceiling water staining from roof storm damage
Interior Staining Rings on the ceiling or attic sheathing mean water has already been getting in, sometimes for months.
  • Granules collecting in gutters and downspout splash blocks
  • Dents in gutters, gutter aprons, and metal roof vents
  • Dinged or pockmarked HVAC condenser fins
  • Split or displaced ridge cap shingles
  • Damaged flashing at chimneys, walls, and valleys
  • Daylight visible through the roof deck from inside the attic

Know This Before You Sign Anything

In Oklahoma, no roofer can pay your deductible

After a storm, out-of-town crews show up offering to cover or eat your insurance deductible. That offer is not a favor and it is not legal in this state.

Oklahoma Statute Title 59, Section 1151.30

A residential or commercial roofing contractor being paid from property or casualty insurance proceeds cannot advertise or promise to pay, directly or indirectly, any part of a homeowner's insurance deductible as an inducement to sell their services.

If a contractor violates this, your insurer is not obligated to consider that contractor's estimate at all. The law also requires every roofing contractor to give you written notice of this rule with their initial estimate.

Added by Laws 2022, c. 331, Section 1, effective November 1, 2022. Amended by Laws 2025, c. 367, Section 1, effective November 1, 2025.

If a roofer offers to make your deductible disappear, the money has to come from somewhere. Usually that is thinner underlayment, skipped ice and water shield, fewer nails per shingle, or no permit. You find out three years later.

Dukes provides the written deductible notice with every estimate, because the law requires it and because you should know exactly what you are agreeing to.

How It Works

Your storm claim, start to finish

You are not filing this claim alone. We inspect first, document what we find, and stay at the table through the adjuster meeting.

1

Free Inspection

A Tulsa estimator walks the roof, checks soft metals and interior, and photographs everything. No obligation and no pressure to file.

2

Honest Answer

If the damage does not support a claim, we tell you that. Filing a claim that gets denied still shows up on your loss history.

3

Adjuster Meeting

We meet your adjuster on site with our documentation so the scope reflects what is actually on the roof, including code items.

4

Build It Right

GAF materials, full tear off, proper ventilation, and cleanup. Backed by the manufacturer warranty and our craftsmanship warranty.

How to check out a roofer in Oklahoma

Storm chasers follow the hail, work fast, and are gone before the first leak shows up. Four things take about ten minutes and will tell you who you are dealing with.

  • Check the state registration

Oklahoma requires every roofing contractor to hold a current registration with the Construction Industries Board under the Roofing Contractor Registration Act. It must be valid when they bid the job and while they perform it. The CIB keeps a public lookup at oklahoma.gov/cib.

  • Ask for the certificate of insurance

Residential roofing contractors in Oklahoma must carry at least $500,000 in general liability coverage, and $1,000,000 with a commercial endorsement. Ask to see the certificate, not just a promise.

  • Find a local address

A Tulsa street address and a permanent phone number mean somebody is still here in five years when the warranty matters. A rented trailer and an out-of-state area code do not.

  • Get everything in writing

Scope, materials, warranty terms, and the deductible notice the law requires. Anything promised verbally that is not on paper does not exist.

Common Questions

Storm damage questions from Tulsa homeowners

How long do I have to file a hail claim in Oklahoma?

Most Oklahoma homeowner policies set a deadline for reporting storm damage, and it varies by carrier. Some are as short as one year from the date of loss. Check your policy language or ask your agent, and do not assume you have unlimited time. The longer you wait, the harder it gets to prove which storm caused the damage.

Will filing a claim raise my premium?

A weather-related claim is generally treated differently from an at-fault claim, but rate impacts vary by carrier and by how many claims are on your loss history. This is a question for your agent, not your roofer. What we can tell you is whether the damage on your roof is significant enough to be worth filing at all.

My neighbor got a new roof. Does that mean I need one?

Not necessarily. Hail swaths are narrow and uneven. Two houses on the same street can take very different hits depending on roof pitch, orientation, and where the storm core tracked. It does mean an inspection is worth your time.

What does storm damage repair cost?

It depends on whether you are looking at a targeted repair or a full replacement, the size and pitch of the roof, and what the deck underneath looks like once we open it up. If the damage is covered, your out of pocket cost is your deductible plus any upgrades you choose. We will not tell you a number before we have been on the roof.

Who is responsible if my neighbor's tree hits my roof?

In most cases your own homeowner policy covers damage to your property, even when the tree came from next door. Liability can shift if the tree was already dead or diseased and the owner was told about it. Start with your carrier.

Can you tarp my roof before the adjuster comes out?

Yes, and you should. Most policies require you to take reasonable steps to prevent further damage. Leaving a roof open to the next storm can give a carrier grounds to reduce what they pay. Call us and we will get it covered.

What kinds of storm damage do you handle?

All of it, on residential and commercial buildings across Green Country:

  • Hail impact and granule loss
  • Wind lift, creasing, and blow-off
  • Water intrusion from wind driven rain
  • Fallen limb and tree strike damage
  • Damaged flashing, vents, gutters, and skylights
